MDC’s North Campus to Host STEM Research Symposium Sept. 24

Miami, Sept. 13, 2016 – The School of Science at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host its fifth annual STEM Research Symposium on Sept. 24.

The dynamic symposium will feature the original research of more than 75 MDC students who worked alongside top scientists from MDC, the University of Florida, Nova Southeastern University, the University of Miami, and St. Thomas University, as part of the School’s Summer Research Institute. These high-quality research projects cover a wide variety of fields, including biology, physics, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and genetics.

“Undergraduate research experiences are changing our students’ lives,” said Dr. Heather J. Belmont, Dean of the School of Science. “They quickly see the connection between their academic work and their future career goals. This is leading to persistence in STEM majors and attainment of STEM degrees.”

The keynote speaker is Dr. Pamela McCauley, who is an ergonomics and biomechanics expert and a Professor and Director of the Ergonomics Laboratory in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems at the University of Central Florida where she leads the Human Factors and Ergonomics in Disaster Management Research Team. She previously held the position of Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

All attendees will have the opportunity to participate in oral and poster presentations on the various research projects, while networking with peers and colleagues.
