MDC’s North Campus to Host First Ever Composition Festival Nov. 20

Miami, Nov. 20, 2018 – The Arts & Philosophy Department at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host its first-ever Composition Festival to spark an interest in the art of composing music on Tuesday, Nov. 20. This event is free and open to the public.

“Hosting a festival which focuses on the art of music composition, featuring our faculty, our student orchestra, and our respected colleagues from the Miami music community, is a first for our campus,” said North Campus President, Dr. Malou C. Harrison.  “We welcome MDCPS orchestra students and faculty, and hope that the shared experience amongst all who participate in this day, enables each to find a new sense of creativity and inspiration.”

The Composition Festival will focus on three major areas of composition: Classical Composition, Jazz Composition and Film Scoring. These areas will be the topics for discussion as MDC faculty members lead 50-minute workshops emphasizing each compositional style and providing clarity on the composing process.

The festival will open with a joint ceremony led by Marc Douyon and Alberto Bade, focusing on “Music as a Language.”  Immediately following the opening ceremony, students will be divided into a rotation of breakout sessions: Music of Living Composers (classical) with Ana Rodriguez; Jazz Composition with Ed Calle and Film Scoring with Alberto Bade. The half-day event will also feature guest composer Maestro Thomas Sleeper, Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Miami. The MDC Symphony Orchestra will perform some of his works, including his Symphony No 1.
