MDC’s North Campus to Host FEMORS Preparedness Exercise May 23-24

Miami, May 15, 2017- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host the Florida Mortuary Operations Response System (FEMORS) Preparedness Exercise on Tuesday, May 23 and Wednesday, May 24.   The exercise will include a disaster site for fatality recovery operations, a disaster mortuary portable morgue, a morgue identification center, and a victim information center.

The FEMORS exercise is in collaboration with MDC School of Justice, MDC School of Science, and The University of Florida.  In conjunction with FEMORS and the Miami-Dade Department of the Medical Examiner, the Florida Air National Guard Fatality Search and Recovery Team, a U.S. Army Transportation Unit, and the Florida Department of Health, EFS 8, will also participate.

The State of Florida, in its disaster preparedness efforts, has collaborated to develop and implement protocols to respond to a mass fatality incident within its borders using trained personnel from multiple state and local agencies, as well as other specialized resources in the event of a human-made or natural catastrophic incident. The investigative and identification process in a mass fatality situation is a multidisciplinary endeavor requiring multiple forensic and medical specialists to come together rapidly often under adverse conditions.
