MDC’s North Campus to Host Broadcast Meteorologist Betty Davis in Celebration of International Women’s Day March 8

Miami, March 1, 2023 – In observance of International Women’s Day and this year’s theme for National Women’s History Month, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,” Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host WPLG Local 10’s Chief Meteorologist Betty Davis to share experiences from her career spanning more than 20 years. She will discuss the unique opportunities and challenges women face in broadcast journalism with MDC students pursuing degrees in meteorology and communications. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 8, at 10 a.m.

“It will be a memorable opportunity for our students and community guests to chat with a television trailblazer,” said professor Lourdes Espana, who organized the activity along with fellow faculty Carmen Mise and Kathleen Noonan.

From hurricanes to tornados and ice storms, Davis has covered all kinds of weather. As Chief Meteorologist, she provides weather forecasts for South Florida Monday through Friday during the 4, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. Davis joined Local 10 in 2011 as the weekend morning meteorologist and was promoted to the primary role in 2013. Before joining Local 10, she spent nearly five years working as an on-camera meteorologist for The Weather Channel. She has worked in several television markets, including Atlanta, North and South Carolina.

Davis is a recipient of the CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) seal from the American Meteorological Society, considered the gold standard in television meteorology. She also holds the seal of approval from the National Weather Association and a Certificate in Climate Change and Health from Yale University. Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in geosciences from Mississippi State University, with an emphasis in broadcast meteorology. She graduated magna cum laude from Atlanta’s Spelman College with a bachelor’s in English. Davis has been a clue presenter on the game show Jeopardy and has appeared on ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan to discuss the weather in Miami.

This year, National Women’s History Month is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories” encouraging recognition of women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling, including print, radio, TV, theater, blogs, podcasts and more. As in years past, MDC will celebrate women with various activities at all campuses throughout the month of March. To learn more, visit
