MDC’s North Campus Presents I Hate Hamlet, a Pen Players Production

Miami, Feb. 15, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus presents a Pen Players Production of I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick, Feb. 23 – 26, at the William and Joan Lehman Theater. The play is free and open to the public.

I Hate Hamlet, a comedy-drama, made its debut on Broadway in 1991 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.  The lead role of Andrew Rally was originated by Evan Handler, best known for his television roles on Sex and the City and Californication. In the MDC production, it will be performed by Shane Prentice.  Rudnick’s play centers on Rally, a television actor who has to decide between taking a theatrical role of Hamlet on Broadway or accepting a role on a new television show. The decision is influenced by his girlfriend who loves Shakespeare, and the ghost of John Barrymore, who famously portrayed Hamlet on the stage in 1922 and is haunting the apartment he shares with his girlfriend. The real estate agent who rents the apartment, his girlfriend and Rally’s acting agent decide to have a séance to remove the ghost.

I Hate Hamlet offers a unique twist for those who appreciate Shakespeare’s original master piece,” said North Campus President Dr. Malou C. Harrison. “This production highlights the outstanding talent of our theatre students, and it is certain to be an enriching treat for audiences.”

The MDC production is directed by Andy Quiroga, North Campus theatre professor. Prof. Quiroga also serves as faculty advisor and producing artistic director for The Pen Players. Recently, The Pen Players put on “Dangerous Passion,” authored and directed by Prof. Quiroga, at Micro Theatre Miami. It was selected as a viewer’s choice winner at the 2015 College and University Festival.
