MDC’s North Campus Pen Players Presents Hometown Sports Diaries: Three Short Sports Plays

MIAMI, June 7, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus Pen Players will feature Hometown Sports Diaries, a short play trilogy produced and directed by Arts and Philosophy Professor Andy Quiroga. Performances will run Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15.

Lasting 10-minutes each, Hometown Sports Diaries is a collection of plays with sports, humor and lots of Miami flavor at their core. The concept of the trilogy was developed by professor Quiroga, with its theatrical portion being a partnership between the Smithsonian Institution, MDC and the Florida Humanities Council. Student director Yesenia Ginzo and locally renowned choreographer Ruth Felix teamed up with Quiroga in the production of the plays.

“The artistic expression and creative collaboration between faculty and students is always a rewarding experience which showcases the abundance of talent we draw and develop at the North Campus,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, President of the North and Eduardo J. Padrón Campuses.

The dynamic and funny stories are performed consecutively as follows:

Hometown Quidditch:

Written by Andy Quiroga, this play is set on the first night of the amateur Quidditch playoffs of the Greater Miami League (Quidditch is a game inspired by the Harry Potter movies, which is played with broom sticks). In the story, the hometown, ragtag “Hialeah Brujos” are about to take on the mighty, undefeated “Miami Lakes Manticores.”  Join the teams with laughs, fears and fun as they prepare to climb their biggest hurdle!

West Side Amateur Ping Pong Story:

This is a beautiful and hilarious ping pong game choreographed by Professor Ruth Felix.  Attendees will join two ping pong competitors, a girlfriend, an umpire and a ball as they skillfully play their way through a ping pong match to the music of Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Federer’s Ball:

Also authored by Quiroga, in this play the audience finds Stefan relaxing to wine and cheese in his stylish Hialeah apartment, when suddenly his peace is disrupted by two friends who have just returned from the 2019 Miami Open Men’s Championship tennis match.  They barge into the apartment, yelling like teenage groupies as they show off a dirty tennis ball given to them by Swiss professional tennis player Roger Federer.  Things quickly go south when the two girls need to figure out who keeps it.  Enjoy the explosion of laughs that ensues.
