Miami, FL, May 9, 2019 — Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus and the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center (MEEC) will commemorate Haitian Flag Day with two ceremonies on Tuesday, May 14 and Wednesday, May 15, at 11 a.m. This year’s events, themed “Bridging the Culture,” highlight the importance of diversity strengthening bonds across varying cultures and will feature keynote speeches by two notable Haitian-Americans, WLRN journalist Nadege Green and City of North Miami Public Administrator, Linda Julien. Both events are free and open to the public.
On May 14, the commemoration will take place at MEEC (6300 N.W. 7th Ave.), and will include a keynote address by Nadege Green, an award-winning journalist at WLRN, South Florida’s NPR station covering issues about race, equity and social justice. A former Miami Herald journalist, for Green journalism is about reaching out to communities that aren’t typically heard and uplifting their narratives. She is a first-generation Haitian-American who jokes; she didn’t really know she was growing up in the U.S. until she went to school– because her parents are so Haitian. She studied English with a specialization in professional writing at Barry University.
On May 15, the event will be held at North Campus’ Lehman Center (11380 N.W. 27th Avenue). It will feature a keynote address by Linda Julien, a first-generation Haitian-American born and raised in Miami, who currently she serves as a Public Administrator at the City of North Miami, focused in the areas of Community and Economic Development for a project called Sole Mia, a public/private partnership between the City of North Miami and a local developer. She is the first Haitian-American to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the IMPAC Fund, an organization comprised of community leaders who are lending their voices to raise awareness about the social injustices committed against the immigrant community. She is also a board member with the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida (HACCOF) and a Miami Fellow through the Miami Foundation, Class X. She has a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Florida International University, and a Master in Public Administration from Florida Atlantic University.
MDC’ students, faculty and staff as well as local high school students, and members of the community will join these special celebrations.
