Miami, April 5, 2018- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) will present Entrevidas (Between Lives), a performance installation and talk by Brazilian artist Anna Maria Maiolino. Entrevidas (Between Lives) is an interactive act that reflects on the precariousness and potential of the present moment. Entrevidas (Between Lives) will have one performance at MOAD on Saturday, April 21, at 7 p.m.
The performance-installation Entrevidas (Between Lives) reimagines an installation originally conceived by the artist in the streets of Rio de Janeiro in 1981, during the period between the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship and its return to democracy. Spectators were invited to cross an obstacle course of hundreds of eggs on a cobbled street, to experience feelings of uncertainty and risk, but also to imagine the resiliency of life and of new beginnings. Entrevidas (Between Lives) uses the simplicity of eggs, archetype of life par excellence, to talk about life. How it resists, in spite of everything. As an immigrant coming of age in a politically unstable Brazil, with this performance and talk Maiolino searched for a new language to articulate everyday human existence.
One of the most important artists of her generation, Maiolino’s multidisciplinary practice has always sought to connect art and life, to give structure to primordial experiences of language, self, and the body. She was born in Italy in 1942 and migrated to Brazil in 1960. She participated in the Nova Figuração (New Figuration) movement there in the early 1960s. Shifting away from representation toward conceptualism in the early 1970s, Maiolino began working with Super 8, photography, and installation art that prominently featured clay. Major exhibitions of her work have been held in 2001 at The Drawing Center and Art in General, New York; in 2005 at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; in 2006 at Miami Art Central; in 2010 at the Camden Arts Centre, London; and the Antoní Tàpies Foundation, Barcelona; and in 2017 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Her work is included in the permanent collections of major museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Entrevidas (Between Lives) is part of Living Together, an exciting cross-disciplinary series of programs that will galvanize Miami audiences with thoughtful and challenging performances and exhibitions that draw from art, music, theater, politics, and poetry. Spread across the city at a wide array of venues, the series features performances, exhibitions, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops that will reflect the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now. Living Together seeks to find new ways to think about civic space and citizenship, to instigate actions and conversations that may help us to reimagine our cities and our lives.
Living Together will take place at various sites across the greater Miami area from now through September and will include works by 17 of the most acclaimed national and international artists, art collectives, musicians, and writers. Events in the series will be produced by MOAD in collaboration with a range of other Miami institutions, and most events will be free and open to the public. The curators of Living Together are Rina Carvajal, Executive Director and Chief Curator of MOAD, and Joseph R. Wolin, and independent curator based in New York.
