MDC’s Miami Book Fair Presents Inaugural De Groot Prize Winners

Miami, Oct. 29, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Book Fair, Nov. 11 – 18, in partnership with the de Groot Foundation, will honor the winner and two runners-up of the inaugural Miami Book Fair/de Groot Prize for the Novella.

A special recognition event will take place during the Street Fair weekend at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, at MDC Wolfson Campus’ Centre Gallery, 300 N.E. Second Ave., Room 1365. The event will feature readings by winner, Marci Vogel (Death & Other Holidays), and runners-up, Nicki Tulk (Before Rain) and Branden Royer-White (Dice), as well as Q&A with all three, as well as with Dennis Johnson and Valerie Merians of Melville House, publishers of the winning title; inaugural de Groot prize judge, author Jim Shepherd; and Charles and Clydette de Groot, principals, de Groot Foundation.

The Miami Book Fair/de Groot Prize comes with a $6,000 cash award; publication by Melville House, a critically acclaimed independent press; an expense-paid trip to the Miami Book Fair after publication; and a chance to participate in programs at the fair. The two runners-up each receive $3,000, an expense-paid trip to the Miami Book Fair, and a chance to read/participate in programs at the Fair. The next submission period is Feb. 15 – April 30, 2019. The de Groot Foundation has a proud history of supporting the novella – a work of fiction 17,000-40,000 words – first, through the Paris Literary Prize in partnership with Shakespeare in Company in Paris, and now through the Miami Book Fair/de Groot prize for the Novella.
