MDC’s Koubek Center Brings an Exuberant Peruvian Tradition to Life! Direct from Lima, the Center welcomes folkloric brass band La Patronal

Miami, March 4, 2019 Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center as part of its Little Havana Social Club series presents La Patronal, a Peruvian folkloric brass band whose music is rooted in the tradition of ‘fiestas populares’ or town fairs common in rural villages across Latin America. The band and its festive entourage will perform Friday, March 15 at 8 p.m.

La Patronal’s music is inspired by the euphoria of village celebrations with their fireworks, dancing, and religious processions, and traditional Peruvian music genres such as huayno, marinera, tendero, festejo, cumbia, morenada and toril. The band, which was formed in 2015, is made up of direct descendants of rural musicians who combine their knowledge of folk culture and formal music studies to preserve their heritage and make the group’s sound contemporary. After premiering its first video, Abreme La Puerta, within a couple of years, the band had landed a U.S. tour.

Peruvian daily La Republica noted: “There’s no predecessor to what La Patronal is doing in Peru: picking up the tradition of village bands from the interior of the country and taking them to a new audience…”

La Patronal brings its performances to life incorporating visual aspects of country-side fiestas, including masks, costumes and traditional dance. The band’s contagious percussion, vibrant brass and winds, and exuberant delivery encourage audience participation and dancing.

The 2018-2019 U.S. tour of La Patronal is supported in part by Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America.
