A selection of fiction and documentaries from Africa, Europe and Latin America explore some of the most important issues of the day
Miami, FL, July 22, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center and the Cultural Center of Spain in Miami (CCEMiami) will present a selection of films from the 17th Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival, August 20-22 at the Koubek Center. All films will be subtitled in Spanish or English. This event is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required. Limited capacity in person seating in the auditorium and option to view online available.
Featuring 13 short and long-form movies from Africa, Europe and Latin America, this year’s festival addresses global issues, including migration, gender violence, food control by multinational corporations, bullying and the fight for respect by the LGBTQ community in several countries. Films range in length from one to 37 minutes and they include documentaries and works of fiction.
Featured films include Brazil’s Contramaré, which showcases a youth orchestra that brings music and hope to a violent shantytown in Rio de Janeiro; Burkinabe Bounty that documents the local resistance in Burkina Faso for food sovereignty and Argentina’s absurdist, darkly comical Una Cabrita Sin Cuernos, (A Little Goat Without Horns) based on actual events, in which a children’s book sparks the paranoid fears of the military ruling the country. Some of these films are sharply drawn vignettes, illuminating the hidden drama of poverty like in Spain’s Macaroni or slyly commenting on world destruction such is the case with Broken Dreams. Others, like the Spanish Diversidad y Tierra (Diversity and Lands), documents testimonies by members of the LGBTQ community from places as disparate as Honduras, Bulgaria, and Morocco, who have been discriminated against and sometimes mistreated by the state and official institutions for being “different.” For a full list of films and to register please visit: https://ccemiami.org/en/evento/festival-de-cine-y-derechos-humanos-de-barcelona-2/
These films will also become topics of discussion and analysis by several MDC departments and programs, including the Department of Communication, Arts and Philosophy, Languages and Social Sciences at the Eduardo Padrón Campus; the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy, and the International Solidarity Institute for Human Rights at the Wolfson Campus.
Headquartered in Barcelona but with a presence in Paris and New York, the Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival is the oldest independent human rights film festival and one of Spain’s most important and internationally established events of its kind. The mission of the Festival is to disseminate cinema that makes viewers reflect, awaken the conscience, denounce injustice and reflect the social and cultural diversity of humanity with the ultimate objective of promoting respect and awareness for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

About MDC’s Koubek Center
A South Florida landmark with a long and rich history as a cultural center, Koubek Center is dedicated to building community through the arts. For several decades, the center has offered various activities, including workshops, art exhibits, plays, literary readings, and concerts. It is a place where local artists and arts organizations can explore and experiment, collaborate and share their work with the community. Koubek Center has a 200-seat theater, a large garden, classrooms, and multipurpose and rehearsal spaces. It was built in 1929 by Austrian businessman John J. Koubek as a gift to his wife.
