MDC’s Kendall Campus to Host Celebration Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence Sept. 12

Miami, Sept. 3, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, will host a cultural and civic celebration to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence on Sunday, Sept. 12, 5 – 10 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Civic activities will include the traditional Gritoceremony, where Jonathan Chait, Consul General of Mexico in Miami, will read the names of the heroes of Mexico’s Independence. In addition, the Consulate will issue The Ohtli Award, an honor the Mexican Government confers to Mexican citizens who work in the United States and other countries and who have given assistance to Mexican nationals or promoted Mexican culture. This year, the award will be bestowed on individuals and organizations that have contributed to the fight against COVID-19 in South Florida.

The event’s cultural program will showcase music and dance from different regions of Mexico, performed by Florida-based dance troops, such as Ballet Folclórico Azteca and Tloke Nahuake, and music ensembles such as Academia de los Niños Mariachi de Homestead, Mariachi Mi México, Ameyal, Comando de Nuevo León and singer Paolo Rubboli. Event goers will also enjoy a wide sample of typical Mexican dishes prepared by local restaurants.

This year’s celebration marks the return to in-person events by the Consulate, interrupted in 2020 by the pandemic, after 26 years. MDC’s Kendall Campus has been the longtime site of the independence day celebration in Miami.
