MDC’s Kendall Campus Presents VOTE! Moving Bodies Activating Space for Annual Black History Dance Production

Miami, Feb. 18, 2020Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus Performing Arts and Industries Department will present VOTE! Moving Bodies Activating Space, a dance production centered around the 2020 National Black History theme, African Americans and the Vote. Comprised of dancers from MDC’s Kendall Dance Department and the Jubilation Dance Ensemble, the performance will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m., with free admission and at 7:30 p.m., with a $5 admission.

Produced by Michelle Grant-Murray, Associate Professor of the Dance Department at MDC’s Kendall Campus, VOTE! is a dance production that activates spaces and engages audiences with thought provoking movement exploring African American history. The audience will experience traditions of African American culture from West Africa to southern Baptist churches as well as explore the elements of hip-hop to afrofuturism. The end of the performance includes a Q&A session between the audience, performers and producer. Voter registration will be available at both performances.

The Jubilation Dance Ensemble is collaborating with the MDC’s Institute of Civic Engagement and Democracy to present Jasmen Rogers-Shaw as the lecturer to discuss the importance of voter registration. Rogers-Shaw, Senior Associate of Reproductive Rights at State Innovation Exchange, works in the field of community organizing and reproductive justice. She has previously served as the Staff and Policy Director with the Miami Workers Center where she spent the last few years building statewide coalitions to amplifying the political power of Black women through storytelling, organizing, and legislation. She has collaborated with numerous other community partners and is currently based in Fort Lauderdale.

Jubilation Dance Ensemble (JDE) is a dance organization at MDC’s Kendall Campus that performs various genres of dance. JDE performs at MDC and participates in master classes, dance festivals, conferences and various academic events throughout the community.

At the Kendall Campus Performing Arts and Industries Department, passion for expression takes center stage. Featuring a distinguished faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and ample performance opportunities, the department guides and develops the artistic, intellectual, and professional growth of its students.
