MDC’s InterAmerican Campus Kicks Off STEMinar Series with Cybersecurity in the International Trade and Tourism Industry

Miami, Nov. 7, 2018- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus kicks off its STEMinar series on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m., with Will Perez, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s Director of Maritime Cybersecurity. The event is free and open to the public.

The STEM-Mia program provides mentoring, community engagement opportunities, scholarships and educational supports to increase the retention and success rates of academically talented students in STEM disciplines.  The program’s STEMinar series is specifically tailored to strengthen STEM communities on campus; reinforce S-STEM scholars’ identity development as future scientists and engineers; and strengthen their leadership and teamwork self-efficacy. The STEM-Mia program is presented with the support of the National Science Foundation.

“For Miami’s vibrant multi-cultural and economically diverse community, the STEM-Mia program is tailored to foster a deeper connection and alignment with our advancing STEM industries, in which cultural diversity has been largely underrepresented,” said Dr. Elodie Billionniere, Program Director. It is an industry that students often overlook when considering STEM careers.”

Perez is director of the maritime cybersecurity department at Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. He has more than 16 years of maritime industry experience with 13 years specializing in cybersecurity. He will discuss his leadership role and the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity for the international trade and tourism industry.  He will also share invaluable insight and personal experiences about his professional growth and development as an IT and cybersecurity expert.
