MDC’s Homestead and North Campuses Receive Nearly $3 Million in Federal Grants to Support TRIO Programs

Miami, August 19, 2020 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Homestead and North Campuses received a total of $2.7 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Education to support the TRIO Support Services program, which strives to increase the success rate of low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and those with disabilities pursuing a college degree.

MDC received $1.3 million in federal funding for the continued support of the TRIO program at the Homestead Campus and $1.4 million for North Campus. Through the program, students receive comprehensive early assessment and ongoing interaction with academic advisors and counselors that result in effective individualized education plans including students’ long-term goals. The TRIO program also offers educational and cultural activities, financial aid and career advisement, tutoring and transfer assistance. TRIO also offers events that appeal to a variety of personal, educational and career interests

TRIO offers learning outcomes that emphasize the lifelong skills needed to be successful in work and life and to participate in society as a global citizen. Those skills are fostered and developed across the entire educational and co-curricular activities associated with the students’ major courses of study. They include effective communication, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills; using quantitative analytical skills to evaluate and process numerical data; problem solving using critical and creative thinking and scientific reasoning, among others.

The U.S. Congress established the TRIO Programs under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America’s economic and social life. Initially, there were only three programs. Now there are seven programs serving more than 800,000 students at close to 1,400 colleges and universities throughout the U.S.
