MDC’s Hialeah Campus Awarded Grant for Health Literacy Project for Seventh Consecutive Year

Miami, May 23, 2019- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Continuing Education and Professional Development at Hialeah Campus was recently awarded a grant in support of MDC’s Health Literacy Project for a seventh consecutive year by the Florida Blue Foundation, in partnership with the Florida Literacy Coalition.

MDC’s Health Literacy Project 2019-20 infuses health-related content into the curriculum of advanced-level classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Using the Staying Healthy book provided by the Florida Literacy Coalition as part of the grant, students learn English in a contextualized format.

The $5,000 grant also supports project-based activities, such as health-related demonstrations where students present to their peers and the campus community. The assignments are an integral part of the course, helping to build students’ confidence and comfort levels when speaking English in public.
