MDC’s Freedom Tower Goes Purple for World Lupus Day May 10

Miami, May 6, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower purple at sunset on Tuesday, May 10, in support of the Lupus Foundation of America, Southeast Region’s World Lupus Day. The special day is commemorated during Lupus Awareness Month when local communities rally to bring greater attention to lupus by wearing purple and lighting buildings, monuments, and fountains purple.

Over half of Americans have never heard of or have little knowledge about lupus, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks healthy tissue and organs, underscoring the urgent need to raise awareness about the disease’s brutal impact on every part of a person’s life. Because many symptoms and effects are invisible, it can often leave those living lupus feeling isolated and misunderstood.
