Miami, Nov. 5, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Earth Ethics Institute is partnering with the British Consul General in Miami and Dream in Green on a new initiative to connect American and British students on the shared goal of addressing climate change.
Dream in Green first partnered with the British Consulate General in 2019 to execute a shared goal of engaging students on issues of climate change, environment, and sustainability, and to educate them on opportunities in green or environmental careers. This new initiative has identified a group of MDC students through the College’s Earth Ethics Institute and students in the University of St. Andrews and the University of Exeter in the UK, who are currently engaging through a series of virtual meetings. The exchange will culminate with a virtual symposium, “We are Speaking but No One is Listening: A Frank Conversation About Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Climate Crisis,” at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 19.
The goal of this initiative is for students to share their real-life experiences and challenges related to climate change and then organize a mini version of the “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition” meeting through a virtual event. Participation will help students gain confidence, improve communication and public speaking skills, as well as help them actively engage in their role as young community leaders, capable of articulating and building consensus around their vision for the future.
Student organizers will focus on highlighting youth-led groups working to solve the climate crisis at the frontlines. Students will listen to inspiring projects being led by their peers as well as BIPOC groups around the world.
This collaboration is timely since the UK is hosting the 26th Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26) this month. The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
