MDC’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center to Host Inaugural BankUnited’s Curious Minds STEM Academy

MIAMI, June 6, 2022 – Starting June 13, Miami Dade College (MDC)’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center will host the inaugural BankUnited’s Curious Minds STEM Academy, an initiative for Liberty City high school students graduating this year or entering their senior year this fall. The Academy runs June 13 to July 22, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., and is being offered free of charge to eligible students.

“This unique partnership with BankUnited/iCARE is an excellent opportunity for eligible high school students to use their summer vacation in a wise an innovative way, while gaining exposure to science, technology, finances, and college experience that will aid in future decision-making about education and career pathways,” said North Campus Interim President Fermin Vazquez.

BankUnited funds the STEM Academy under its iCARE initiative to give youth exposure to the fundamentals of physics, robotics, programming, engineering, digital fabrication, technology and finance in an intellectually stimulating but fun way during the summer break. Students participating in the Academy will also learn the basics of developing apps, savings and credit, learn to play golf and enjoy field trips. They will also earn three credits toward an associate degree at MDC. Students who complete the six-week program and those who successfully finish their first semester of college this December will also receive cash stipends.

The Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center is a major outreach center of MDC North Campus. The Meek Center has a particular focus on educational opportunities in entrepreneurship, business-related programs, science, technology, community development and vocational programs that prepare adult and high school students for today’s workforce and emerging industries. It offers a full range of student and academic services, including advisement, career counseling, financial aid, tutoring, and a food pantry. There are also opportunities to engage in a variety of conferences and workshops. Students can complete academic programs, obtain educational requirements for an associate degree, or attend as a convenient, centrally located facility for additional classes.
