MDC’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center to Host Free College for a Day

Miami, March 2, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center (MEEC) invites students and the community to experience Free College for a Day on Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Participants will learn first-hand what it is like to be a college student by engaging in a variety of interactive workshops in various fields while interacting with current college students

“We believe that affording everyone a taste of college courses and student life will help our community better understand how attainable a college credential really is, and how much it can help to advance one’s career and life,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, president of the North Campus.

Participants will also be able to learn about the vast credit and non-credit program options available at MDC, including industry certifications, credit certificates as well as associate and bachelor’s degrees. Middle and high school students and their parents can learn about the dual enrollment program, which allows qualified students to earn college credits prior to high school graduation.  There will also be a resource fair that will take place during the event to showcase all of the opportunities available at MDC and through area community organizations.

Workshop topics cover the various disciplines and programs at the College, including IT, film production, graphic design, criminal justice, business, art, construction, and more.  Additional workshops will help attendees learn about financial literacy and different ways to pay for college, how to start a business, how to speak before an audience, learn a new language and current high demand jobs in South Florida.  The event will also help community members enroll in GED programs.

“Our door is always open.” said Executive Director of the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center, H. Leigh Toney.  “From public school students to our elders — and everyone in between — college has something for everyone.”
