Miami, April 11, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater, the U.S. home of top foreign films, will present the world commercial debut of Cuban independent film Santa & Andres, directed by Carlos Lechuga, at 8 p.m., on Friday, April 28. Actors Lola Amores and Eduardo Martinez will attend the screening. The actors will also discuss the film at an event for the working media at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Tower Theater.
Set in 1983, the second feature from Lechuga chronicles the conflicting relation between Andrés, a novelist ostracized for his “ideological problems” and his sexuality, and Santa, a woman charged with keeping this ostensibly dangerous dissident from disrupting a political event and gaining the attention of the foreign press.
The film, banned in Cuba, was initially selected to compete in the Havana Film Festival New York, but was pulled from the program by Lechuga after being removed from the competition. Santa & Andres has played at more than 35 prestigious international film festivals, including this year’s 34th Miami Dade College Miami Film Festival, where it won the Knight Competition Award for Best Performance (shared by Amores and Martinez). It also won Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress at the 2017 Guadalajara Film Festival (Ibero-American Competition).
Born in Havana, Carlos Lechuga studied directing at Cuba’s Instituto Superior de Arte, and scriptwriting at the International Film and TV School in San Antonio de los Baños. After directing several short films, he made his feature debut with Melaza. Santa & Andres is his second feature.
