Miami, Oct. 15, 2018 – For a third consecutive year, former presidents, heads of state, and regional leaders will participate in a dynamic forum titled “¿El crimen organizado secuestra las democracias en América Latina?’ (Is Organized Crime Hijacking Latin American Democracies?) Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.
Organized by the acclaimed Mezerhane Endowed Chair at MDC and the Iniciativa Democrática de España y las Américas (IDEA), the timely gathering will provide a venue for participants to discuss how organized crime poses one of the biggest threats to democracy in the Latin American region. The forum will be in Spanish with translation services available. The working media is welcome.
Among the leaders and luminaries expected are the former Bolivian President Jorge Quiroga, former Colombian President Andres Pastrana, former Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, former Costa Rican President, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, former Ecuadorian President Jamil Mahuad, former Uruguayan President Luis Alberto Lacalle, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almagro, MDC’s President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, President of Grupo Mezerhane and Executive Editor and Publisher of Diario Las Américas Dr. Nelson J. Mezerhane, and IDEA’s Executive Director and MDC Visiting Professor Dr. Asdrúbal Aguiar. Panel discussions and presentations will address narco-populism and the breakdown of the democratic states and the regional experience with commissions against impunity and the scope of transitional justice.
