MDC Students Advocate for Miami-Dade County Poetry Month Proclamation

Miami, April 4, 2022 – As part of National Poetry Month, Miami Dade College (MDC) students participated in a letter-writing campaign, asking Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to officially proclaim Poetry Month for Miami-Dade County. As a result of the students’ civic engagement, and with the support of county Poetry Ambassador and former MDC director of internal communications Nicole Tallman and the legislative sponsorship of Commissioners Jean Monestime and Oliver G. Gilbert, III, the Board of County Commissioners has officially declared this April and every April hereafter as Poetry Month for Miami-Dade County.

MDC Professors Carmen Misé and Brooke Bovee, as well as North Campus President Fermin Vazquez and Dean of Faculty Dr. Efrain Venezuela, will attend the Board of County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, April 5, for the official presentation of the proclamation.

The North Campus officially began celebrating National Poetry Month in 2017, when former City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado issued an official proclamation that was unveiled at the EEC. Since then, MDC students have honored the national observance every April by reading and writing poetry on campus.
