Miami, Oct. 10, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will once again host former heads of state from Latin America and Spain who will convene for the 7th Annual Presidential Dialogue, a program that analyzes top global, hemispheric events, with former leaders from Latin America, Europe and other parts of the globe. This year’s summit will take place Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. – noon at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami, featuring two panel discussions under the theme “Western Democracy, After the Scourge of War.“ MDC President Madeline Pumariega will deliver welcome remarks. The forum will be in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation in English and also live streamed at https://www.mdc.edu/livestream/
Organized by the Mezerhane Endowed Chair at MDC, Iniciativa Democrática de España y las Americas (IDEA), Instituto Atlántico de Gobierno and Diario Las Américas, the forum will discuss the impact of the war in Ukraine, particularly in the West.
The first panel (9:30 – 10:30 a.m.) will kick off with the presentation “Retail Democracies, Between Beijing and The Summit of The Americas” by Colombia’s ex-president Iván Duque Marquez. Panelists include former heads of state Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador; Costa Rica’s Miguel Ángel Rodríguez; and Bolivia’s Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga. EVTV’s Carla Angola will moderate.
In the second panel (10:30 -11:30 a.m.) José María Aznar, former Prime Minister of Spain, will speak on the “Growing in Freedom, the Challenge of the West.” Panelists include Latin American ex-presidents Vicente Fox, Mexico; Mauricio Macri, Argentina; and Luis Alberto Lacalle, Uruguay. NTN24’s Content Director Idania Chirinos, will moderate. Additional guest speakers will include Dr. Nelson J. Mezerhane, editor, Diario las Américas; IDEA’s Dr. Asdrúbal Aguiar, and Jatzel Román, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic.
