MDC North Campus to Host Six-Week High School Summer Journalism Institute

Miami, June 19, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will once again offer its High School Summer Journalism Institute, a six-week, intensive, dual-enrollment program launched in 2017 to introduce students to careers in journalism.

Participants in this internship-style program will learn the basics of reporting, news and feature stories writing, as well as the process of creation of new products through video editing, newspaper designs, photography, headlines and caption writing. Students will be given opportunities to meet professional journalists and visit local media companies. In addition, they will produce and publish their own eight-page newspaper at the end of the course.

As part of this year’s Institute, the JOU1100: Basic Reporting course will be taught by renowned journalist Hector Manuel Castro. A published author, songwriter, and blogger, the Colombia native holds a law degree from Universidad Libre de Colombia and a master’s degree from Florida International University. For almost 15 years, Castro has worked as a producer and reporter for some of the top news agencies in Latin America and the United States, including seven years as producer and researcher for CNN en Español. Most recently, he joined Univision Communications.

“Our goal is to show students who participate in the Summer Journalism Institute, a point of reference and a pathway to achieving their dreams of becoming a journalist,” said North and Eduardo J. Padrón Campuses President Dr. Malou C. Harrison. “By sharing his knowledge and experience in journalism through this course, Mr. Castro will not only be challenging students to go beyond their comfort zone when drafting news stories but will also introduce them to current trends in journalism and its changemaking power in today’s global landscape.”

Enrollment is now open. The program will be offered at MDC’s North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave., from June 24 through Aug. 2, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
