MDC North Campus to Host Art Showcase of Budding High School Artists

Miami, Sep. 21, 2016Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus Arts & Philosophy Department will present the inaugural Art Showcase for Advanced Placement (AP) High School Students.  The showcase is a juried, invitational exhibition of work created by talented, local high school students.  Works will be exhibited in Gallery North throughout the month of September.  There will be a closing ceremony on Sept. 30, 4 – 6 p.m. to announce the award selections. The event is free and open to the public.

“We’re proud to serve as the convener and host for this first annual showcase of high school students’ AP Studio Art work,” said MDC North Campus President, Dr. Malou C. Harrison.  “The collaboration of M-DCPS high school art students and teachers with North Campus student and faculty counterparts presents great possibilities, and we look forward to the fruits of this inaugural initiative.”

With cooperation from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), Advanced Placement high school art teachers were encouraged to forward AP student artwork for jury, display, and awards.  Students who are pursuing AP Studio Art credit engage in a year-long process of portfolio development.  Three different portfolios were created – 2D, 3D or Drawing– and each required a Concentration section which entails a sustained investigation, a Breadth section to demonstrate the student’s understanding of a variety of media or techniques, and a Quality section which are the five best pieces the student has produced.  During the month of June, all three of the portfolio areas were evaluated by both high school and college art educators from all over the country, contracted by the College Board, and then all work were returned to the student.  This exhibition is another opportunity for the student work to be seen beyond the classroom, school, and professional reviewers.

The exhibit has been juried by Jason Moodie, Lead Arts Educator for Alvin Independent School District (ISD) in Texas.  For 10 years, he has served as an AP Studio Art Reader, and is the former Studio and Gallery Program Director for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

This juried exhibition program is supported through a Community Grant granted to MDC’s North Campus by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.
