MDC North Campus to Host Annual Heart Fair on World Heart Day

Miami, Sept. 19, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Science at the North Campus, in collaboration with Healthy Hearts Initiative, a non-profit organization seeking to change the course of cardiovascular disease for underserved communities in South Florida, will host the Annual Heart Fair on World Heart Day from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, at the North Campus Conference Center.

“The North Campus is pleased to serve as host partner for the cause of educating our students, faculty, staff and greater community about factors associated with heart health and overall wellness,” said North Campus President Dr. Malou C. Harrison.

The Heart Fair is a FREE health event for the entire family to learn about heart health from board certified cardiologists and other experts who will discuss heart health, healthy lifestyles, and resources available. In addition, there will be complimentary screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and body mass index.

“Heart disease remains the number one killer in the U.S. and in our community,” says Dr. Minerva Santo-Tomas, board certified cardiologist and founder of Healthy Hearts Initiative. “Cardiovascular disease kills more people than all forms of cancer combined, yet in many cases it’s preventable. This is why we’ve teamed up with MDC’s School of Science and the North Campus, so we can raise awareness in our community about this vital health issue.”

The Heart Fair is made possible due to the strong support of community partners that include MDC’s North Campus and Medical Campus, Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, the Health Council of South Florida, Gilead, Vitas Healthcare, Phoenix Center for the Healing and others.
