MDC North Campus to Host 36th Annual Children’s Fire Safety Festival October 10 – 13

Miami, Oct. 9, 2023 – In commemoration of National Fire Prevention Week, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies at the North Campus, in collaboration with the City of Miami’s Fire-Rescue, will host the 36th Annual Children’s Fire Safety Festival with daily events Oct. 10 – 13. An opening ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at MDC North Campus.

This year’s theme, “Pay Attention to Prevention: Cooking Safety Starts with You,” highlights the importance of imparting vital fire safety education to children. The event will offer five interactive stations by educators from Miami Fire-Rescue, Miami Beach Fire Department, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Coral Gables Fire Department, Hialeah Fire Rescue, Key Biscayne Fire Rescue, Homestead Air Reserve Base Fire Department and the UHealth Jackson Burn Center.

Working to enhance fire safety awareness among children, the Children’s Fire Safety Festival has been a pillar in the community for over 36 years, fostering collaborations between local fire departments, safety organizations and schools.

“Year after year, numerous households fall victim to fire hazards, many of which can be prevented,” said North Campus President Fermin Vazquez. “This event plays a pivotal role in reducing such accidents by equipping our young ones with essential knowledge and helpful prevention tips.”

The festival will welcome 2,500 children from first to third grade, who will participate in interactive sessions, absorbing crucial life-saving skills and preventive measures. The activities cover a wide spectrum, from planning secure home exit routes and practical demonstrations of the “crawl low under smoke” maneuver to the pivotal “stop, drop & roll” protocol and hands-on 911 simulation experiences.
