MDC Miami Fashion Institute Students to Showcase Designs during BritWeek

MIAMI, Feb. 7, 2017 – Miami Dade College (MDC) Miami Fashion Institute (MFI) students will present their best work as part of BritWeek’s VIP Reception on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach.

Sergio Lopez, Gaby Lopes, Carmen Lopez, and Raquel Theodora will discuss the process of developing their ideas.  During their first semester, these students were given a 60s MOD brief as part of their final project which drew inspiration from that era including British fashion icon Twiggy and design icon Barbara Hulanicki,  who is also a member of the MFI Board of Advisors and served as a judge for their final designs.

A student display will include four looks and their mood boards. It also includes a deconstructed step-by-step process of the designing of a garment which reinforces MFI students ‘conceive and create’ strategies.  Scholar-in-resident to MFI, Nicholas Huxley, worked with the students to create their unique presentations. The top four students were chosen to present their designs at BritWeek, the largest celebration of British business and culture in South Florida.

MFI is an international fashion hub and the only one of its kind at a public higher learning institution in Florida. Housed at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, MFI offers degrees in Fashion Design and Merchandising.  MFI works with local and international designers to develop a 21st century skilled workforce that supports industry growth and demand, especially in South Florida where fashion is booming.
