MDC Live Arts Launches EcoCultura with Dreamlike Blend of Animation and Live Performance

Performer Miwa Matreyek Weaves Together Earth and Humanity in Gorgeously Innovative, Multimedia Show

Miami, Nov. 1, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts kicks off EcoCultura — a new series of performances featuring dynamic dance, theater, spoken word, and music events that spark action, advocacy, and dialogue around local environmental challenges – with L.A. based-animation and performance artist Miwa Matreyek from Nov. 15 – 17.

Matreyek will present an expansive, visually stunning examination of the impact of humanity on Earth’s natural systems. At the cross section of fantastical cinema and classic theater, her new work Infinitely Yours weaves together dreamy interpretations of current climate headlines, including destructive weather systems, the uncontrolled spread of pollution, and the loss of natural habitats. Matreyek will also perform Myth and Infrastructure, an animated world of oceanscapes, cityscapes, and domestic spaces that she traverses in surreal scenes of light and color. Myth and Infrastructure premiered at TEDGlobal 2010 in Oxford, England and has since been performed at various venues and festivals around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the All Design Conference in Istanbul, and the Théâtre de la Cité in Paris. Matreyek presents Infinitely Yours during EcoCultura as a very special preview of the upcoming full-length piece that she will premiere in January 2020.

During her residency with MDC Live Arts, Matreyek will engage students across disciplines on five MDC campuses. She’s scheduled to present a special students-only performance of Infinitely Yours and Myth and Infrastructure, as well as give a series of artist talks in which she’ll share information about her creative process and interest in environmental issues. For the general public, CIC Miami’s Venture Café will host Matreyek in an artist talk specifically geared toward entrepreneurs and innovators where she’ll offer a behind-the-scenes look at her inspired use of technology in film and performance art.

Matreyek has performed her interdisciplinary shadow performances all around including animation/film festivals, theater/performance festivals, art museums, science museums, tech conferences, and universities. A few past presenters include TED, MoMA, SFMoMA, Lincoln Center, New Frontier at Sundance Film Festival, Future of Storytelling Conference, Walker Art Center, Wexner Center for the Arts, REDCAT, ISEA conference, Anima Mundi (Brazil) and many more. She earned an MFA in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media from CalArts in 2007.  She is a recipient of the Sherwood Award (2016), Creative Capital Award (2013), and Princess Grace Award (2007), and has taken part in residencies at MacDowell Colony and Headlands Center for the Arts. Matreyek is also a co-founder and core-collaborator of the multi-media theater company, Cloud Eye Control.
