MDC Literary Magazine Students Shine at Annual FCSPA Conference and Awards Ceremony

Several MDC students were recognized and advisors inducted in FCSAA Hall of Fame.

Miami, April 27, 2022 – More than a dozen Miami Dade College (MDC) students representing literary magazines on several campuses were recently recognized at the 62nd Annual Florida College System Publications Association (FCSPA) conference and awards ceremony. In addition, professors Emily Andrea Sendin, advisor to Urbana magazine, and Victor Calderín, advisor to Café Cultura magazine, were inducted into the Florida College System Activities Association’s (FCSAA) Hall of Fame.

The FCSAA Hall of Fame is comprised of Administrators, Coaches, Advisors, Officials, Students, and other nominees that have contributed a minimum of ten years to FCSAA or one of its member institutions.  They have been selected by their peers on the merits of their community and state college contributions and achievements as well as significant accomplishments.

Professor Sendin has been the advisor of Urbana for 13 years, as well as serving as a member of the Florida College System Publications Association since she submitted the first volume of the magazine for competition in 2008. Urbana has received national awards in recent years, including Pacemaker finalist, Pinnacle general excellence, and Community Colleges Humanities Association individual and general excellence awards.

Professor Calderín has been the faculty co-advisor to MDC’s Café Cultura literary and visual arts student magazine for 15 years. He co-founded Café Cultura at the Hialeah Campus in 2007. Since then, the magazine has won a myriad of awards from the FCSPA and two prestigious Crown awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In the past three years, Café Cultura won 33 awards at both national and state levels. Prof. Calderin also helps to organize the Miami Book Fair student magazine table and open mic poetry readings across his community.

In addition to these inductions into the FCSAA Hall of Fame, this year, Café Cultura and Urbana were awarded 2nd and 3rd Place respectively in the General Excellence Category of the FCSAA Publications Contest Awards.
