MDC Kendall Campus to Host Annual Mexican Independence Day Celebration Sept. 10

Miami, August 30, 2022 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, will again host a cultural and civic celebration to commemorate the 212th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence on Saturday, Sept. 10. This event is free and open to the public.

Activities will include the traditional “Grito” ceremony, where Jonathan Chait, Consul General of Mexico in Miami, will read the names of the heroes of Mexico’s Independence. In addition, the Consulate will issue The Ohtli Award, an honor that recognizes outstanding Mexicans living in the U.S. who serve the community and strive to promote the culture.

The program will also feature live music and dance from different regions in Mexico, including Academia de los Niños Mariachi de Homestead; the mariachi band Mi Mexico; vocalists Marisol Castillo and Paola Ancona; the group Comando de Nuevo Leon; and Richard Amador singing Juan Gabriel songs, among others. As always, a variety of delicious Mexican food will be available for purchase.
