MDC Journalism Speaker Series Presents Naples Daily News Minority Affairs Reporter Maria Perez July 30

Miami, July 9, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Journalism Speaker Series presents Naples Daily News minority affairs reporter Maria Perez at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 30, at MDC’s North Campus.

Perez, who has worked at the Naples Daily News since April of 2014, won the 2017 George Polk Award for a story that revealed how some Florida companies profit from the labor of undocumented immigrants in high-risk occupations but when workers get injured on the job, the employers or their insurers report them to law enforcement and deny them medical care.

Prior to Naples, Perez worked at El Nuevo Herald as a general assignment reporter. She covered local news, including crime, courts and government stories while in Miami. She also worked as an arts reporter at El Mundo, Spain’s second largest daily newspaper, and as a social issues and science reporter for EFE wire service.

She has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, a dual bachelor’s degree in law and journalism from Spain’s Carlos III University and a certificate in business administration from Spain’s Center for Economic & Commercial Studies.

The MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, 61 journalists have participated in the series.

The program includes a presentation by journalists followed by a question and answer session. All MDC Journalism Speaker Series presentations are free and open to the public.
