Miami, May 25, 2022 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) popular Journalism Speaker Series, now in its 15th season, goes online this summer via Instagram Live @mdcthereporter. The next guest will be WLRN digital producer Sherrilyn Cabrera, who manages the station’s PM newscast. She will appear at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 27.
Three of this year’s guests have MDC ties, including Cabrera, a Wolfson Campus alumna. She started her career as a summer intern for WLRN in 2019. She also served as a reporting fellow for TCPalm covering the Treasure Coast during the 2020 election and as an associate producer for news casts for Boston NPR station WBUR.
The new season kicked off on May 13 with veteran newsman Gregg Birnbaum, formerly of Politico, CNN, the Miami Herald and NBC News. He was followed by Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald photojournalist Matias Ocner, who was a staff writer for The Reporter in 2012.
Upcoming guests will include Angie Martoccio, an associate managing editor at Rolling Stone magazine, at 12 p.m. on June 10. She covers music and pop culture and has interviewed Olivia Rodrigo, Marisa Tomei, Joan Jett, and Neil Young, among others. The series will also present New York Times tech reporter Kashmir Hill. Details will be announced soon.
The MDC Journalism Speaker Series launched in Feb. 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, more than 73 journalists have participated in the series. The program includes a presentation by the journalist followed by a question-and-answer session. All presentations are free and open to the public.
