MDC Galleries of Art + Design Present Grand Opening of Dimensions Variable Gallery Space

Miami, FL, Feb. 1, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Galleries of Art + Design (GOA+D) will present the grand opening of the new Dimensions Variable (DV) gallery space, located at the College’s Wolfson Campus. The innovative partnership pairs the largest and most diverse higher education institution in the nation with a local non-profit artist-run space. The opening will take place 6 – 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Dimension Variable gallery, located at the Wolfson Campus.

DV opens with Vice Versa – Leyla Cárdenas. Over the last few years, Cárdenas has developed a series of works that investigate the layers that compose architectural spaces and directly relate to the physicality of the space as a point of departure. Cárdenas works in a sculptural way without making sculptural objects, using destruction as a means to build her new narratives, and allowing a new engagement with the same place. In Vice Versa, she will use remnants from the demolition of walls from DV’s recent renovation to examine the history of the space.

Vice Versa runs through Mar. 31 and is supported by Locust Projects, Miami Music Club, KARA Wines, and Tuyo Restaurant. For an appointment to view the exhibition, please call 305-606-0058 or 305-607-5527.

About Dimensions Variable
DV is an exhibition space committed to the presentation and support of contemporary art. Through a collaborative exchange with artists and institutions, Dimensions Variable develops an exhibition program that engages the community and promotes new and experimental ideas. Dimensions Variable was founded in 2009 by artists Frances Trombly and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, who currently collaborate and co-direct the project space.

At the end of 2015, Dimensions Variable and Miami Dade College formed an innovative partnership that paired the non-profit artist-run space with the largest and most diverse college in the nation, and in December 2016, DV opened its 3,000 square-foot gallery on the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College. With space donated rent-free by the college, the partnership enables Dimensions Variable to continue presenting contemporary art exhibitions and public programs in addition to providing enhanced educational and community activities to the downtown Miami area. Dimensions Variable is made possible through a partnership with Miami Dade College.

Support for Dimensions Variable is provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and by Cannonball through its WaveMaker Grants program, which is part of the Andy Warhol Foundation’s Regional Re-granting Program. WaveMaker Grants is supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Addition support for Dimensions Variable is provided by The Design District, MDC Live Arts and direct individual contributions from the community.
