Live Arts Miami Presents Two New Climate-Conscious Dance Works by Dale Andree & Sandra Portal-Andreu

Miami, April 21, 2021Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Live Arts Miami continues its successful LALA Performance Series with a special double-bill of new climate-conscious dance works by Dale Andree and Sandra Portal-Andreu at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 13 and May 14. This second installment in the series will feature unforgettable new performances addressing climate change and sustainability produced by the 2020/2021 LALA Artists In Residence at the Pérez Art Museum Miami’s (PAMM) beautiful outdoor Palm Terrace, featuring sweeping views of Biscayne Bay. Event is free with RSVP.

The evening will begin with CIRCA/MIA by Portal-Andreu, a one-of-a-kind multi-media performance and film, CIRCA/MIA explores visions of Miami’s future based on drawings, interviews, and dialogue with 35+ children across Miami-Dade County, and performed by six of the children’s mothers. The performance is accompanied live by the eclectic sounds of Miami’s own, Afrobeta. The artist describes it as “a postcard to the world from the children of Miami-Dade County.”

Andree will present SUCH ROOTED THINGS, conceived and drawn from interviews with ten women from different backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities across Miami-Dade County who are experiencing the effects of climate change in their neighborhoods. The project also includes a choreographic collaboration between Andree and her daughter, Thryn Saxon, exploring themes of generational connections, shared responsibility, and the power of unity when confronting climate change, as well as a collaborative work by Thryn and her dance partner Brad Beakes. An original film created for this piece will be screened inside PAMM. Such Rooted Things is supported in part by a grant given to NWD Projects by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge, an initiative that supports ideas that connect people to place and each other through art.

The LALA Performance Series is the capstone to Live Arts Miami’s Live Arts Lab Alliance Artist (LALA) residency program, which empowers local performing artists from different backgrounds and disciplines to generate new work and establish new connections and networks of creative feedback and collaboration.
