Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce to Honor MDC North Campus President, Dr. Malou Harrison

Miami, April 18, 2016 – Miami Dade College (MDC) North Campus President, Dr. Malou Harrison, will be honored at the 5th Annual Women of Inspiration “Pearls of Wisdom” Luncheon at noon Thursday, April 28, at the FIU Covens Conference Center. The annual event is presented by the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce.

With more than 35 years of leadership experience championing the cause of underserved students in public higher education, Dr. Harrison oversees MDC’s founding North Campus, with an enrollment of some 50,000 students and a diverse graduating class representing more than 60 nations. In addition, she oversees MDC’s academic outreach center, the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center in Liberty City.

She has served MDC for 27 years in various capacities, including Chief of Staff, Dean of Students and adjunct professor of English as a Second Language, prior to which she served as an administrator at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Dr. Harrison is on the national Advisory Board of the Community College Consortium on Immigrant Education. Locally, she serves on the University Relations Board of the City of North Miami; Board of Directors of Camillus Health Concern, Inc.; Executive PASS Partner of Jose Marti MAST Academy, North Miami Beach Sr. High School, Brentwood Elementary School; and PTSA President of Coral Gables Sr. High School. She has co-authored scholarly articles in the League for Innovation in the Community College’s Student Services Dialogues: Community College Case Studies to Consider; and also the Association of American College and Universities’ (AAC&U) Peer Review: Models for Student success:Developing a Community College Student Roadmap. In 2015, she was Miami-Dade County’s In the Company of Women Honoree for Education and Research; the Florida College System’s Cameron Hall Practitioner Honoree for demonstrating high levels of humanitarianism and she was profiled in Diversity Journal’s Women Worth Watching.

Since 2012, the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Women of Inspiration awards have recognized women who are leaders in South Florida and dedicated to the growth, empowerment and success of their respective industries and areas of philanthropy. Past recipients include Mayoral Candidate and Miami-Dade School Board Member Raquel Regalado, Commissioner Sally Hayman and Deputy Chief of Facilities and Eco-Sustainability Ana Rio-Conde.
