Award Winning Spoken Word Artist Asia to Visit MDC Hialeah Campus

Miami, March 15, 2016- After overcoming cancer, award-winning spoken word artist Asia used his love of poetry to inspire others.  The Asia Project will assist students in sharing their stories during a writing workshop and a performance at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 16, at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Hialeah Campus.

The Asia Project, which consists of spoken word artist Asia, and his brother-in-law Jollan, will lead a writing workshop with English composition students, creative writing classes and the student literary magazine, Café Cultura. The workshop entitled, Your Life. Your Story, will be followed by a performance. Both events are open to all of the campus community. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own lives and resiliency.

“Who we are and who we are meant to become is a collection of constant creation and revision.  “I am still a work in progress,” said Asia.

During a battle with cancer in 2006, Asia made a vow that if he managed to survive his medical ordeal, he would no longer take life for granted. In the years since, Asia has done just that. His words are an honest and genuine testimonial to his life.  He uses humor and inspiration to move crowds ranging in size and venues around the country.

The Asia Project blends Asia’s words with Jollan’s guitar talents for a show that is inspirational and moving. The duo plays an average of 150 college shows yearly and have been named Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) Performer of the Year as well as APCA Spoken Word Artist of the Year for three consecutive years.
