Miami Dade College’s North Campus Presents Building the Wall

Miami, Nov. 29, 2017 Miami Dade College (MDC) North Campus’ Pen Players group will present a production of Building the Wall, written by Robert Schenkkan in response to the rhetoric heard during the 2016 presidential campaign, Friday through Sunday, Dec. 15 – 17. Free and open to the public.

The single act play takes place in 2019, after a terrorist attack leads to martial law and the widespread detention of millions of immigrants. Rick’s, a security officer who has been imprisoned for crimes committed during the creation of the containment camps, actions are understood through a prison interview conducted by a female history professor. The two-person play is undoubtedly a political statement framed through the discussion of a liberal professor and a Trump supporter.

Schenkkan wrote that Building the Wall, “is not so much what the authorities will do but how we, the citizens, will respond.” The New York Times hailed it as “a political drama that sketches a dark vision of an America in recovery.”

The MDC production is directed by Andy Quiroga, North Campus theater professor and producing artistic director for The Pen Players. It is also supported by Raul F. Hernandez Frederick, theater technical director.
