WHAT:
Miami Dade College (MDC) will host a panel on Tuesday, April 16, as part of Brookings’ Election ’24: Issues at Stake to discuss how the next administration and Congress can responsibly manage tax policy and government spending while limiting the economic costs of ballooning public debt. The event will open with remarks from MDC President Madeline Pumariega and will feature a keynote from Brookings President Cecilia Rouse. The panel will then reflect on the policy choices and consequences ahead and respond to questions from the in-person audience.
Over the next two decades, the United States’ yearly budget deficits are projected to grow to more than double their historical average, leading public debt to become an increasingly large share of the national economy. To manage the government’s borrowing and spending, policymakers will face a host of difficult decisions. How the next administration and Congress address these challenges will have important implications for not just the state of the U.S. economy but for the finances and well-being of households and small businesses across the country, including in greater Miami and the state of Florida.
