Unveiling of a Star on Calle Ocho Dedicated to the late Comedic Legend Guillermo Alvarez Guedes

At MDC’s Historic Tower Theater

Miami, May 23, 2016- The Alvarez family, City of Miami, and Miami Dade College (MDC) will pay special tribute to the late Cuban comedic legend, Guillermo Alvarez Guedes, on his birthday June 8, with the unveiling of a star on Calle Ocho, a reception and a film at MDC’s Tower Theater. The star will be unveiled just outside the Tower Theater. The unveiling is open to the public. The reception and film are by invitation only, but open to the working media.

On the afternoon of the event, the star unveiling will take place at 4 p.m., the reception inside the theater by invitation only at 5 p.m. and a film composed of clips from throughout Alvarez Guedes’ career will be screened at 7 p.m. Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, Alvarez Guedes’ widow, Elsy, family members, artists and community leaders will attend. The event and film are being directed and produced by Lucia Sanabria and José Carlos Prado.

Born in Union de Reyes, Cuba, on June 8, 1927, Alvarez Guedes forged a long and distinguished career with his unique use of popular language as a standup comedian, not only in his native country, but throughout Latin America, the United States, and the world. He was forced into exile in 1960. He passed away in July of 2013.
