Miami, Nov. 3, 2020 – Rocio Sullivan, a student at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Entertainment and Design Technology (SEDT) at the North Campus has been nominated for the Best Student Film Award at the 2020 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival for her documentary, Inside Out. The film highlights MDC’s Inside Out Prison Exchange Program.
Inside Out showcases the dedication of MDC North Campus Social Sciences faculty member Dr. Minca Brantley-Davis and School of Justice Professor Samantha Carlo to implement the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program, where MDC students take classes alongside inmates at the Everglades Correctional Institution. It features MDC students working together and just how important educational opportunities are for incarcerated individuals.
Under the guidance of SEDT Professor Adrian Garcia, Inside Out was directed by Sullivan and produced by Esteban Rodriguez and Sullivan. The documentary sends a message of redemption and looking past the cruel labels that society places on incarcerated individuals.
Sullivan, a film director, producer and content creator, is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in film, television and digital media production at MDC. She has directed and produced three short films, two music videos, in addition to Inside Out. Sullivan has worked at In and Out Productions, a marketing ad campaign company based in Miami.
The Inside Out Prison Exchange Program at MDC opens the door for additional post-secondary education opportunities for individuals incarcerated in South Florida. In April 2020, MDC’s North Campus was selected as a Second Chance Experimental Site, allowing the College to offer a full Associate in Arts program at Everglades Correctional Institution.
