Miami, Feb. 29, 2016 – As part of the Building Global Leaders, International Speaker Series, Carme Chacón Piqueras, Spain’s first female Minister of Defense will discuss women in politics, leadership and public service at 9:50 a.m., Tuesday March 8 at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Chacón Piqueras, will share details of her own journey in becoming the first female Minister of Defense from 2008-2011. She will also discuss her role as an advocate for women’s rights and the proud passing of the ground-breaking law, Organic Law for Equality between Women and Men, which mandated that discrimination not be tolerated in the workplace, education, and other institutions including the Armed Forces.
“We are pleased to once again host Ms. Chacón Piqueras,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, president of the MDC’s North Campus. “This is a formidable opportunity for our students to engage first-hand with a global leader and gain insight on her experiences of leadership and public service.”
Born in Catalonia, Spain, Chacón Piqueras obtained a law degree from the University of Barcelona and served as a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Girona in Spain. She has held many key governmental positions including Vice President of Spain’s Parliament and Minister of Housing.
Currently, Chacón Piqueras is a professor in residence at MDC and serves as a lecturer for MDC’s Office of International Education, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives, and the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy.
