Save the Date! Maker Faire Miami Returns to Miami Dade College, April 7 – 8

Miami, Feb. 15, 2018 – Once again, Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with MANO Americas and in association with John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Santander Universities and Maker Media, will host Maker Faire Miami on Saturday and Sunday, April 7 – 8, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., at its Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The event will feature inventions and interactive exhibits across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft.

Maker Faire Miami is a festival of innovation, creativity and resourcefulness for all ages that celebrates the global Maker Movement. Now, with Maker Faire Miami at MDC for a second straight year, our city is joining an elite band of 35 cities around the world to host larger-scale Maker Faires including Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Atlanta, New York and Shenzhen.

This year, visitors can expect a demonstration from Magformers, an industry leader in magnetic building toys for children, on how magnetic technology delivers a unique constructional play experience.  Learn how to eliminate plastic bottles by creating a homemade seltzer water system.  Check out a human powered snow cone machine that operates solely by a person running on an eight-foot hamster wheel. Enjoy home grown delights from Miami native Cristina Ivory who will showcase her locally sourced Angry Booch kombucha; and Jose Rovira, owner of Paleta305, will share all natural ice pops that are locally sourced with natural ingredients.

The most recent Maker Faire at MDC featured makers from Spain and Latin America as part of its 140 exhibitors, and attracted big crowds. Some of the most popular exhibits included virtual reality, drone racing, Lego cities, self-driving vehicles and a BattleBots competition.  There was also a fabrication pavilion of makers integrated by the FabLab Latin America network, an arts and crafts bazaar, and a tech and science expo. MDC’s new Makers Lab will feature front and center in the upcoming Faire. The two-day event also included a master class with famous DJ Kid Koala and a series of maker talks on building locally-productive cities, making sustainable chocolate and driverless cars, among others.  The Maker Faire at MDC has also spawned a state-of-the-art Makers Lab at MDC’s Wolfson Campus for use by students and faculty college-wide with the very latest technology and instruments. It will also be showcased at the Faire.
