Miami, FL. Dec. 4, 2017 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) is pleased to announce Living Together, an exciting cross-disciplinary series of programs that will galvanize Miami audiences with thoughtful and challenging performances and exhibitions that draw from art, music, theater, politics, and poetry. Spread across the city at a wide array of venues, the series features performances, exhibitions, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops that will reflect the cultural, social, and political realities of today. Living Together seeks to find new ways to think about civic space and citizenship, to instigate actions and conversations that may help us to reimagine our cities and our lives.
Living Together will take place at various sites across the greater Miami area from January to September 2018 and will include works by 17 of the most acclaimed national and international artists, art collectives, musicians, and writers. Events in the series will be produced by MOAD MDC in collaboration with a range of other Miami institutions, and most events will be free and open to the public.
On Jan. 12, 2018, performance-art pioneer Karen Finley will reprise her one-woman show, Unicorn Gratitude Mystery, taking on citizenship, gender disparity, and abuse of power in a darkly comedic experimental nonlinear poetic text that creates a jolt of intuition and analysis. On Jan. 20, the celebrated performance group My Barbarian (Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, Alexandro Segade) will explore colonialism, slavery, and climate change through song and dance as they present a hilarious Miami-centric version of their cabaret-style work, Bride of the White Widow. On Feb. 3, MDC’s Wolfson Campus Auditorium in Downtown Miami will host Past Tense by the renowned artist and 2013 MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems, which combines music, song, video, and searing spoken word to reflect upon the moral quandaries raised by Sophocles’ Antigone 2,500 years ago, and its resonance in the present era of racial injustice and police brutality against people of color.
Bringing the series back to the Museum, Living Together joins the grand opening of the renovated MOAD MDC in April 2018. From April 7 to 29, the gallery will host This Situation by internationally recognized British-German artist Tino Sehgal. Combining aspects of theater, dance, the Socratic method, and unscripted interactions with visitors, six interpreters muse on topics both economic and existential. On April 21, a performance-installation by Brazilian artist Anna Maria Maiolino, Entrevidas (Between Lives), will pose questions about the present by revisiting a major work from the past. Closing out the series, from May 19 to September 30, More Sweetly Play the Dance, a video installation by acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge, will fill the space with an encircling procession, partly animated, partly filmed, that mixes historical reference with contemporary themes in a darkly comic celebration of resilience and life.
Resonant performances and compelling talks by Eleonora Fabião, Samora Pinderhughes, Antoni Miralda, Jumana Emil Abboud, Ann Pellegrini, Teatro Ojo, María José Arjona, André Lepecki, Richard Blanco, and Jack Hirschman will also be featured.
A preview of Living Together was presented in Sept. 2017 and featured a lecture/performance by the Brazilian artist Berna Reale. Also in Sept., the Living Together Film Series commenced with screenings held monthly at MDC’s Tower Theater and The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami. The Film Series will continue on selected Thursdays through April 2018.
Living Together grows out of the specific context of both Miami and Miami Dade College. A unique location in its connections to other places and societies, Miami possesses its own particular cultural and environmental character. A port where many residents came from other places, through either voluntary migrations or forced displacements and exile, it is also a frontier city, a nexus of borders both external and internal, with its location at the crossroads of the Americas and the Caribbean, and its distinct histories of ethnic segregation and separation between its different communities.
MDC is the nation’s largest, campus-based institution of higher education with an enrollment of more than 165,000 students, with one of the largest international student bodies representing more than 190 countries.
“Living Together will engage with this diversity,” said MOAD MDC Executive Director and Chief Curator Rina Carvajal, “to ask how our differences might do more than divide us.”
MOAD MDC believes that contemporary art and design can play a vital role in civic and public life. Its various programs will encourage alternative ways of making, engaging with, and thinking about art, and spark relationships among people and places that foster a sense of belonging and inclusion. The curators of Living Together are Rina Carvajal and Joseph R. Wolin, an independent curator based in New York.
