Miami, July 20, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater continues its exclusive movie lineup with the Miami theatrical premiere of Our Little Sister on Friday, Aug. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The Honorable Takahiro Ogihara, the Deputy Consul General of Japan in Miami, will introduce the film, which is directed by internationally acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda.
In Our Little Sister, three sisters, Sachi, Yoshino and Chika, live together in a large house in the city of Kamakura. When their father — absent from the family home for the last 15 years — dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral, and meet their shy teenage half-sister. Bonding quickly with the orphaned Suzu, they invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and a new life of joyful discovery begins for the four siblings.
Adapted from shojo manga artist Akimi Yoshida’s Umimachi Diary (Diary of a Seaside Town), Our Little Sister may be considered a contemporary successor to Kon Ichikawa’s masterpiece The Makioka Sisters. Kore-eda also directed 2013 Cannes Jury Prize winner, Like Father, Like Son, which was shown at the Tower Theater as well.
Before the film presentation, attendees will experience the thunderous and spirited rhythms of Fushu Daiko as the group brings the more than 2,600-year-old tradition of Japanese Taiko drumming to Little Havana.
Fushu Daiko is a local group of performers that have been training in the art of Taiko since 1990. They have collaborated with Grammy-nominated artists and been recognized by the Mayor of Miami and the Consulate General of Japan in Miami. Their music combines the traditional drums and rhythms of Japan with musical styles from around the world, such as jazz and rhythm and blues, to create an exciting, powerful cross-cultural experience that strives to cross boundaries and connect cultures.
Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors, students and MDC staff; and $10 for MDC students, Tower Theater and Miami Film Society members. Free parking available in the lot behind the theater.
