Miami, July 11, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host a week-long college immersion program for members of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Program from July 15-19. Sixth through eighth grade students from several Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) will participate in the program, which concludes with an awards ceremony to highlight the completion of the week.
The 5000 Roles Models of Excellence Project is a dropout prevention, mentoring program committed to closing the minority male achievement or access gap. Students are guided along a carefully charted path through grades K-12 and college or ensured the attainment of other post-secondary credentials. Thereby, increasing their employability in higher wage, high skills jobs within high demand industries.
“MDC’s North Campus is the ideal higher education partner for this type of student engagement,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, president of the North and Eduardo J. Padrón campuses. “For more than 10 years, both MDC and the 5000 Role Models of Excellence have been providing post-secondary opportunities for minority males of Miami-Dade County.”
Students will also participate in enrichment workshops involving technology, classroom resources, and career planning to further reinforce the value of pursuing higher education. The program will also introduce families to the benefits of earning college credits with Dual Enrollment.
This is the second year North Campus has partnered with 5000 Role Models to offer the program. Students will be engaged with numerous career-related immersion activities led by MDC faculty and staff from various academic areas.
“The Early College Experience provides an opportunity to address skill gaps in students and improve study skills and academic knowledge before becoming college students,” added Dr. Marcus Bright, coordinator of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. “Early exposure to the higher education experience is a crucial part of guiding boys and young men on a carefully charred path to college and career success.”
