Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art + Design Announces a Second Installment Exhibition from its Vast Art Collection

Miami, May 16, 2016 – The Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOA+D) proudly announces the opening of the second installment of Recent Acquisitions + Highlights II, containing selections from the MDC’s vast art collection. Notable artists and works in the exhibition will include Cundo Bermudez, Ruben Torres Llorca, Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers, Jasper Johns, Jim Dine, Louise Nevelson, Robert Motherwell and many others. An opening preview will be held on Wednesday, May 18 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.  An ongoing exhibition will open to the public on Thursday, May 19. The preview, exhibition, and supporting programs are free and open to the public.

“We have extended the MOA+D collection show to include works that have not been exhibited for many years as well as recent acquisitions,” says Wanda Texon, the Museum’s Interim Director. “The results, we hope, provide a stimulating and exciting look deeper into the MDC collection. As an actively collecting institution, we are enthusiastic to bring this important aspect of the Museum to the public.”

Recent acquisitions include works from Robert Huff, Bernard Cooper, Arnold Mesches, Margarita Cano, and Florencio Gelabert, among others.

MDC has been collecting art since the 1960s. Over the years, the collection has grown to contain more than 1,750 works in all mediums and genres, specifically within the movements of minimalism, pop art of the ’60s and ’70s, conceptual art and contemporary Latin American art. MDC and the Museum actively acquire works by emerging and under-recognized artists, as well as major figures in modern, post-modern and contemporary art. In 2011, the MOA+D became stewards of the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection, establishing a rich tradition of exhibiting works by artists of Cuban descent in support of the Freedom Tower’s symbolic relationship to the local Cuban community.

Recent Acquisitions + Highlights will remain on view on an on-going basis.  Educational programs, lectures and workshops will be announced on occasion.
