Miami, Oct. 11, 2022 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Arts and Philosophy Department continues its successful jazz series, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, with the MDC Jazz Alumni performing at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 19, at MDC Wolfson Campus. The concert will be available in-person and via livestream. All Jazz at Wolfson Presents concerts are free and open to the public.
Made up of some of MDC’s most celebrated graduates from Wolfson Campus’ Department of Arts and Philosophy, the featured musicians will include pianist Kemuel Roig, saxophonist Hery Paz, and guitarist Richard Padron. They will be accompanied by MDC’s jazz faculty musicians Ludwig Afonso on drums and Gary Thomas on bass.
Roig has forged an exciting career, initially being part of famed trumpeter Arturo Sandoval’s band and touring with guitar legend Al Di Meola. Released in 2020, “Genesis” was his first recording as a leader and features Chris Potter, Randy Brecker, Alain Perez, and Julio Padron. In November 2020, Roig recorded his most recent musical project titled “Live Acoustic Session.”
After leaving MDC, Paz continued his studies with Gary Campbell at Florida International University and New England Conservatory under Jerry Bergonzi. Having moved to New York City, his musical skills have led to john tedwards site performances with some of jazz’s most celebrated musicians, including Dave Liebman, Kris Davis, and Francisco Mela.
Padron, an accomplished composer and guitarist, is known for his versatility and virtuosity. “On electric and acoustic guitars, he writes music in a very particular way, using unusual melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic approaches,” said National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera. “His guitar playing is compelling, powerful, and passionate.”
