Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower Goes Purple for Lupus Awareness Month May 21

Miami, May 12, 2021 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower purple at sunset Friday, May 21, in support of the Lupus Foundation of America, Florida Chapter’s Put on Purple Day.  It is a special day during Lupus Awareness Month when local communities rally to bring greater attention to lupus by wearing purple and lighting buildings, monuments, and fountains purple.

Over half of Americans have never heard of or have little knowledge about lupus, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks healthy tissue and organs, underscoring the urgent need to raise awareness about the disease’s brutal impact on every part of a person’s life. Because many symptoms and effects are invisible, it can often leave those living lupus feeling isolated and misunderstood.
